MM: Sasquatch Edition Pt. II

A mere Spanish test, 3 chapters of Econ homework, 7 hours of lab work and an 8-10 page research paper stands in my way tell Sasquatch this coming weekend. Not to mention the Econ test and only god-knows-what I've forgotten about that awaits me the day of my return, but still my excitement builds.

Will I put off all packing and end up sleeping on a twisted pile of nylon and poles in my only pair of boxers and socks? Almost definitely. My only hope is that I manage not to forget to bring enough of the most necessary and life-sustaining substance, drugs water.

Anyhoo, thought I'd center this drop on the artists that I probably won't be seeing at Sasafras so sit back and enjoy: the bands I won't be seeing.

To kick it off there's Cudi. While I have nothing against him or his music, I've decided to sell my Sunday ticket to ensure I have sufficient funds for beer food. Sad you may say? Trust me it gets worse...

Snoop Dogg "That Tree" Feat Kid Cudi

Truly sorry I'll be missing this un...
KiD CuDi - T.G.I.F. (ft. Chip The Ripper)

David Guetta Feat. Kid Cudi - Memories

THIS is the main upset. P.E. plays Sunday, and as much as I'd love to see them, I've had to pass 'em up.
Public Enemy - he got game

Public Enemy - 911 Is A Joke

Also playing Sunday that I wish I could make:
Massive Attack - Teardrop

The xx - Crystalised

It's A-Trak I'm missing, not the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, I could never pass up an opportunity to see Karen O live.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Heads Will Roll (A-Trak Remix)

They Might Be Giants - Boss Of Me (it was so hard to find the music video, but so worth it.)

LCD Soundsystem - North American Scum (video)

And those are just the Bands on SUNDAY! Think of all the great groups I'll be poo-pooing for day drinking extra sleep on the other two days!

[Edit] This dude deserves special mention. I first heard this guy on Okayplayer with this sick joint:

TiRon - 3 Drink Minimum

Lyrics, the humor, and the interesting production made me spin da joint enough to finally end up copping his mixtape Ketchup Honestly tho, soon as I got it I really only listened to that one song a few times and then lost it in the catacombs of my Itunes. Until today, when I noticed his name again on Okayplayer witha new mixtape coming out called 'MSTRD.' Well I did some sleuthing and found out I like a couple of his songs. So this next one is on me, with official *A TON APPROVAL*

TiRon - Throwing My Money

There-Goes-The-Neighborhood-Thursdays'

Try new things right? We'll I'll be damned if someone tries calling me close minded as I've recently picked up about 2 gigs of metal, metalcore, death metal, black thunder and black metal music. Couldn't even begin to try and tell you the difference of these genres, but it's nice to explore a new genre which I literally no nothing about.

It's not that I've disliked metal in the past, I've just never been drawn to it. I never hated my parents, spent time terrorizing neighborhood animals or lived in a basement devoid of light.

While everything I've listened to thus far has sounded like a continuation of the last song and had indiscernible lyrics, I think I'm starting to hear subtle differences in guitarist playing styles and picking songs that are more enjoyable than others.

Here's the top THRASH tunes I've heard:

The Agony Scene - We Bury Our Dead At Dawn

On the whinier, more glam-rock-y side of things there's 3 Inches of Blood. From what I understand of the lyrics, they sound like ballads right out of a twisted J. R. R. Tolkien middle-earth. I like to imagine this is what the hardcore dungeon masters listen to as they roll die to see what chances of survival they're dungeon-crawling friends have.

3 inches of blood- axes of evil

3 Inches of Blood - Isle of Eternal Despair (Upon the Boiling Sea III)

Aaah, It's like I can feel myself recoiling from the society and rejecting the norm maaan.

Doomriders-Fuck this shit

Dimmu Borgir - Lepers Among Us

In the end though, there is only so much metal I can manage. It's like a form of mental masturbation, it's stimulating and mind numbing, almost zen, but after a while I start finding myself wanting more substance. Or maybe I'm just not getting it. Either way, if you've made it this for, treat yourself to this:

Off of Flyinglotus's new album COSMOGRAMMA this track has been on loop for a MINUTE in my 'pod. If you aren't already, get familiar. Homeboy is SICK with the sounds. You've probably heard a jam or two of his on [adult swim] one time or another.

Flying Lotus - Do the astral plane

Totally Missed Music Monday Tuesday

Last weekend was the last weekend that Mt. Bachelor was open so naturally I needed to eek every bit of winter enjoyment I could from it, and for those of you who know me personally, you'd know that I had been growing my hair out since the beginning of the winter and had planned to cut it after the closing of Bach. So coupled with the farewell to snow slapping, I must also bid a due to my luscious locks. I got snipped on Monday and have been having pangs of remorse intermittently throughout the past two days. HThe new doo (which I'll update my blog photo with... eventually) is a clean cut version of myself that I haven't seen ina minute. Hopefully the formal, trimmed, all-business look will transfer and be reflected in my school work and endeavors.

On to the tunes!

First up is this dope joint I happened upon whilest studying and listening to a Miike Snow Pandora playlist. It really made me think of this song witha similar message by High Speed Chase Scene which can be heard...

The Persuaded - Faded Paper Figures

...right here. While I may have already posted this 'un, it's definitely worth a re-play in my book and I've been riding the mountain to it ever since I discovered it on The Neptune's album Clones.

High Speed Scene - Fuck N' Spend

Some 80's beats to keep ya'll heads ringing...

LL Cool J - Mama Said To Knock You Out

Beastie Boys - No Sleep Til Brooklyn

Dj Kool feat Biz Markie & Doug E. Fresh - Let Me Clear My Throat

'Cause it wouldn't be complete without some Rick the Ruuuula
Slick Rick & Doug E Fresh - The Show

Short drop I know, but I got 12 costume design drawings ranging from the 1940's to the 80's (course I'm styling a B boy, com' ooon) and a Business take home test I gotta slay, not to mention much needed research for a BAMF paper I gotta write on the history of Vans.

Gotta love school right?

West Coast Wednesday

While it's probably not going to be a mainstay to the A-ton blog, I've been listening to copious amounts of west coast rap this fine Wednesday evening. As of late I've mostly been listening to artists that will be featured at the Sasquatch Music Festival which I will be attending the 29th-31st(!!!). It's been nice going back to my "roots" so to speak (I know, I know, I'm from the NW not the W, though I'd never kill for the thrill I'd cut for the cause) and just scratchin' that itch that is the dopeness of the West.

To get the jump off jumped off, a lil Ice...

Ice Cube - Check Your Self

Ice Cube - It Was A Good Day

Souls of Mischief - That's When Ya Lost (music video)

Some new blood that I've heard plenty about but have explored only in passing, Nipsey Hussel reps the West haaaard. While I don't condone his occasional use of auto tune, I do enjoy his deeply rooted, west coast beats that almost seem lost in today's glossy, pop-hop. As far as I'm concerned only time well tell if he has the staying power of the greats, but in the mean time he sure got some jams! Oh, and did I mention The Hundreds backs him? Follw sheep, follow...

Nipsey Hussle - Piss Poor

Nipsey Hussle - Ridin' Slow

Nipsey Hussle - Black Superman (Featuring Smoke & Numbers)

Nipsey Hussle - Hussle In The House

Aaaaan right back like a yo-yo, some old cuts again

Above The Law - Black Superman

Cypress Hill - Dr.GreenThumb (uncensored)

Cypress Hill - Illusions

Probably one of the Doctor's sickest songs, Keep They Heads Ringing features one of my most favoritest beats eva.

Dr. Dre - Ring Ding Dong

Dr. Dre Featuring LL Cool J - Zoom

Another dash of new schooler...

Fashawn - Hey Young World (Ft. Aloe Blacc & Devoya Mayo)

Fashawn - The Score (feat. Planet Asia)

Oh and this guy? Yea I guess he kinda West Coast too... Arguably one of his best album's, Doggystyle will always hold a special place in my heart.

Snoop - Who Am I ( what's my name?)

Snoop - for all my niggaz and bitches

Snoop Dogg - Pump Pump

Aaaah, feels good don' it?

Mother Mayham!

Frank-n-Dank - Ma dukes

Ma dukes #1 forEVER! A little late I know, but better late then never as ma moma always said. While this holiday seems to have lost it's essence to the likes of Hallmark and chocolate covered cherries there are still the few and the brave who do more than send a cliche card saying something they could have spent a mere three minutes thinking of opposed to three dollars buying one. For those who spend time over dollars, I salute you.

Forgotten Freak Friday

Lupe Fiasco Ft. Japanese Cartoon - All Sabotage

Ooopsy! Forgot to get a Freak Friday in, mostly due to my newly acquired illness which I probably got from some sweaty fuck at the Lupe Steppin' Lazers tour I attended up in Portland on Thursday.

All infections aside, the concert (pictures to come) was phenomenal and Lupe really surprised me with the energy and edginess of his performance. With a live band, the bassist, drummer and guitarist were all exceptionally talented and enthusiastic; giving the show a reminiscent punk feel. The crowd however seemed to be caught a little off guard as they really didn't seem to be all that lively. I don't know how ya'll do, but when I'm at a show I get into it. Most people seemed too concerned about keeping up with their ever-shifting personal bubble rather than the spectacle taking place onstage. Now I go to a fare share of shows, and I have pretty much come to peace with the fact that I'm going to be pushed, leaned on, and generally man handled. Does that mean I'll abuse the excuse of close quarters to do the same? Absolutely not. When I post a spot I post hard, I don't give a turds corn kernel if your boyfriend is "just right up there" a gentlemen would have stuck with you. But I digress...

Every song played, while recognizable, had a considerably different sound from the album versions as the show drew heavily from Lupe's side project Japanese Cartoon; the funkier, punkier group that kinda acts as Lupe's rock outlet. Chiggity check their myspace for some tracks.

Clipping right along, dis lil gem is probably the sickest live action homage to Street Fighter I've seen to date. While most are pretty lame, this holds up much better in comparison and makes for a pretty fun watch. Chiggity Check it.

Cinco de Drinko

It's May 5th and I slept through my first class. The holidays just keep rolling in, with yesterday being the unofficial Star Wars day, today is the offical... drink tequila and wear sombreros celebration? Honestly I don't think more than 15% of college students know what the traditional Mexican holiday of Cinco de Mayo is in celebration of and I can almost guarantee less than 2% give two shits. (All stats were made up on the spot for the purpose of this article. Using Science.)

Any way, I decided to spend my unearned free time wisely and look into the matter. Celebrating Mexico's unlikely victory over the French in 1862, Cinco de Mayo is a primarily regional holiday celebrated in the city of Puebla where, not surprisingly, the Battle of Puebla was fought. The common misconception is that Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican Independence of sorts, but it isn't and is only recognized in various parts of Mexico and for some reason every campus in the U.S.

{Continued from 5pm}

Just got back from work, a send off with some tunes before I jet to the Mothership to do some laundry and catch up on all the cable tv I've been missing.

Zapp Roger - Computer Love

Lupe Fiasco-The Cool

Weezer - Buddy Holly

*EDIT* May Park Edit is LIVE!

Busy busy week this week, midterms looming, research papers in need of initiation, and a Portland trip planned Thursday. A laid back weekend didn't help prepare me either, managed to ride incredible spring conditions over at Bach and even though I mistakenly waxed my snowboard with surf wax I still had a ball in the park. The Roommate, a.k.a Scooby, a.k.a Jasper had his style all the way turnt up and I was filming him for some park sesh so expect an edit up here as soon as he gets it toghether.

In the mean time, in between times, we got some tunes.

First up: new Onra!! A producer of the French persuasion, this cat rips it up on production and slayed with his first album Chinoseries. (which I highly recommend) Dilla-esque in nature, Chinorseries fused a hip hop and soul formula with eastern sounds. In his upcoming album, Long Distance, the feel is much more soul-centered but none the less solid as heard on his singles Long Distance & High Hopes. Enjoy.

Onra & Olivier Daysoul - Long Distance

Onra - High Hopes ft. Reggie B

Next are some tracks from the recently deceased Nujabes, a Japanese producer who was probably most known for his tracks being sampled by the late night [adult swim] commercails, as well as the anime Samurai Champloo. R.I.P 'jabes

Nujabes Tribute - Rest In Peace - 1974 - 2010

Nujabes - Flowers

And as a finisher, some joints from 40 waters newest albums Revenue Retrievin: Day & Night Shift. One of hip hop's most unorthodox ryhmers, I could not get enough of the new joints in the park this weekend. His viscous, drippy, bubble gum sweet style makes for excellent music to ride, rip, and dip to.

E-40 - Hes A Gangsta (Ft. The Boy Boy Young Mess, The Jacka, Kaveo)

E-40 - Lightweight Jammin (ft. Clyde Carson & Husalah)

E-40 - Duck
