Giggs featuring B.o.B - Don't Go There

Come'n at you from across the pond (and brought to my attention by my buddy !DoubleFine!) is the molasses-lipped Giggs. For a review of his new album "Let em ave it," head on over to !DF!'s blog for a most excellent write up.

Ladies and gentlemen: Ron Livingston

Flying low and staying grimy, this next track is straight from the underground. As window shaking, nursery rhyming, mu fuckas make money, it's nice to know that some cats are still in the gutter grinding out with minimalist beats and acrobatic wordplay. Scoring an 89 on Okayplayer.com (as if ratings meant anything anymore), Homeboy Sandman's new album "The Good Sun" will soon be gracing my library soon as I buy that's right buy, the album. Check out the Okayplayer review ova meah.

Homeboy Sandman - Not Pop

And then:

Sam Sparro - Black and Gold

And then:

It's taking me some time to warm up to R&B, but I've learned to embrace it (mostly thanks to the guidance of GutterTrash) and as of late I have been diggin the sound.

Released from one of my favorite record labels, Stones Throw, comes the silky smoove vocals of Mayer Hawthorne. Working with the likes of Aloee Blac, Mf Doom, Guilty Simpson, and Peanut Butter Wolf just to name a few, Stones Throw has a reputation for being real real.

Mayer Hawthorne - Maybe So Maybe No

Mayer Hawthorne - Just Ain't Gonna Work Out

Also hailing from GT's influence on my musical taste, is Dj Bl3nd. Gutter and I have both thrown up his '09 Club mix and he has a '10 electro mix that was released fairly recently. While the Chuckie mask he wears I find down right terrifying, he mixes a mean dance track.

*Edit* I guess Dj Bl3nd lives a year in the future cause this is his '11 mix.

That Nu Nu

Oh shit! Homeboy Exile (from Blu an Exile) done dropped a bomb! If you've heard him of him through the likes of Blu and him, you don't got the whole picture.

The dude is phenomenal and easily one of my favorite producers. He's got an album in the works titled AM/FM slated to drop round the end of August and I'm stoked.

Here's the offical on the free mixtape that's got me so excited:

"Free download of Exile’s Radio (Bonus Album) in celebration of his upcoming August 31st AM/FM release via Plug Research. AM/FM will feature various producers remixing the original Radio tracks, while Blu, Fashawn, Shafiq Husayn, Samiyam, Free the Robots, DJ Day, Clutchy Hopkins, Evidence, Alchemist, Krondon, Muhsinah, Aloe Blacc, Grouch and Eligh go over the originals. The amount of submissions were so high, not everything could fit on the official AM/FM album, hence the free download."

And here's a link to ish itself.

Do yourself a favor and listen to track 9; The Machine (DaVinci Remix).

Mixtape Monday

As of late I've found myself gathering mixtapes rather than singles and thought I'd share a few the A-Ton certified ones. All are available from getrightmusic.com and I highly suggest you start peepin their style as they are on point with the mixtape releases.

Underground for a minute now, Dead Prez pops up with this sick ass jam tape. While nothing new in terms of content (an ambiguous but powerful cry for freedom), my favorite is the re-imagining of "Far From Over." I know when I first heard Drake on it I knew it could have been put to better use. Check it

Just released today, Dj Premier (one of my FAVORITE producers. i.e Jeru The Damaja, Group Home, Big Shug and of course Gang Starr) drops the New York Reality Check 101. NY in nature, the ish is hot. Having only spun it once I can't touch on it to heavy because I want ya'll to enjoy it for it as the typea fresh it is.

You probably know her from the single "American Boy" feat. one of showbiz's most pompous rappers Yeezy, and Estelle does not disappoint with her mixtape #ialmostmadeamixtape. I think she's an incredibly talented singer and the mixtape is an excellent show of her talent.

Hailing from CA, this up an comer has been on my radar since Double Fine put me on him awhile back with his "Life as a shorty" track. Ode To Illmatic unsurprisingly, is just that. Using the timeless and versatile beats from Nas's debut street album "Illmatic," Fashawn pays homage to one of the greats. Beauty is in the ear of the beholder, and for me, it works.

Last but certainly not least is Big Boi's banga' Mixtape For Dummies. If you've heard his new album you know, if you got this before it like I did you been knowin': Big Boi is dope.

Short n sweet, I got things so peace for now ya'll.

Summa trips

Swedish House Mafia - One (Your Name) feat Pharrell

First and foremost I gotta speak on the Caribbean cruise I took the first week of summer because it has been faa to long.

Leaving early in the morn' the Remington Clan (sans the little sister, she had broken her wrist the day before we left and had to stick in town for surgery) boarded a plane headed East with final destination being San Juan, Puerto Rico.

After a rainy monsoon-y night in, we took a bike tour of San Juan and saw the sights. Below is the tile ceiling of the capital building. The mosaic lining the ceiling depicts (in the four corners of the building) the four changes in government. From the Spanish landing, the freeing of the local slaves, the English arriving to current, the piece was gorgeous. On the domed roof, was another mosaic showing the six virtues of Puerto Rico (arts and literature, health, justice, liberty, etc. etc.)

Once a walled in city, the coast of Puerto Rico is almost entirely lined with the fortifications left from colonial times. We toured many of the segements and below is a picture of the top of one of the sections of walls.

But what are fortresses without gats right? Here's a big 'ol stack of cannon balls which would be lobbed at invaders dare they try an half step.

Get some.

These are cave drawings found in one of the cells for captured or mutinous folk. The prison only had a tiny slit of a window and it was practically pitch black w/o the added electric lights so these would have been drawn completely by feel.

San Juan was practically a ghost town the day we toured, as Fathers day is held in high esteem and regarded a day for family time. Almost everything was closed and the parks and pavilions we visited were next to deserted.

After the tour, we boarded The Victory, our floating apartment for the next week.

Yeah we had a balcony, nbd.

Traveling by night and enjoying by day the to the islands of St. Kitts, St. Thomas. St. Lucian, St. Maarten, and Barbados, the trip was mad sick. Unfortunately, I took very few pictures, but only because I was enjoying the moments to the fullest as they came.

Here be a pirate vessel I spotted on one of the islands

Top deck wiggle

Center ceiling 3rd deck, tequila tastin' night

Something I must mention, the waiters and waitresses on the boat were incredible. The service was impeccable and they would bend over backwards to make sure all of your needs were met (and lets be honest, does anyone really need to take a luxury cruise?). Our personal room cleaner was Roy and he would greet me every morning with a cheerful "Good morning Alec!" and would leave a oragmi-esque towel animal folded on the bed every night. Here are all the waiters singing a good bye song on the last night of the cruise. For six months these people slap on a shit-eating grin and act like they love whomever is on that boat, and for that I salute them.

On St. Maarten, an island co-owned by the French and the Dutch, I noticed on the French side they had the audacity to hang not only Old Faithful but ol'... Maple as well UPSIDE DOWN!! I don't know what it means but I was disgusted. Cotdaaym French.

Last night, full moon. Simply treathbaking.

OH and the FOOD. GOD the FOOD, 24hr soft serve at your finger tips, changing buffets daily, and fine sit down dinning to boot. My favorite dishes were the lobster bisque, NY stake, duck soup. Luckily for me, there was also a gym on board so I kept my waist in check as well (one day work out = 5 days of gorging right? Shut up, 's a vacation)

Sheeeeeeit, right? Don't I have a Facebook or something?? What's with all the pics man? Well in all honesty I had hoped to write more on the trip, so here are just some bullet-point highlight stories:

-First friend I made on the boat was a tall black boy named Will who was 17. Drawn to me by my good looks, I quickly learned Will was gay and was nicknamed Kitty for his affinity to scratching in bed. We hung out a few times on the trip and he informed he goes on a cruise every year and has been on 8 (some years he does more then one). Due to his knowledge of the situation, he quickly became the rally guy for kids ages 15-19.

-Because of the alcoholic-infused nature of the crew, my being 20 put me squarely in the purgatory of age groups. To old for the Oxygen club for tweens (not an actual oxygen bar i was disappointed to learn) and to young to buy drinks at the bar. The key word there being buy drinks. I quickly learned I could purchase a bottle of rum and empty it into my water bottle and get just as socially outgoing as the thirstiest of guests for a fraction of the cost. On the last night, I went all out an blessed the Arctic bar's dance floor with my full B-boy move set. Indian step aaall the way to a six step. ya buddy.

-My second friend was a dude from NY bedsty who I got to talkin' hip hop with at the bar. His name was Andy and he claimed that Immortal Technique lived in the same apartment building as him. On the cruise with his parents as well, this 23yr old was my dude. He repeatedly told me I was "money with the ladies" as we were both winging for each other, an "his n*gga" which I was surprisingly comfortable with being (its OK cause he black, in fact, on the cruise ship honkies were the minority).

-On one excursion (I think on St. Maarten) I made the acquaintance of 3 boys from DC ages 22-24. After bonding over the love of beer, we would occasionally cross paths on the boat and on the second to last night I pretty much soldiered with them the whole time. Through them, I met two gorgeous babes from Tennessee who were the highlight of my trip.

-On the last night, I met the third young lady from Tennessee. Unbeknown-est to me, she was engaged. With only the best intentions, I playfully flirted with her only to be hoisted a foot off the ground by her fiance Moose Mike. After realizing this drunkard was serious, I quickly apologized and left the group to let them simmer down. From across the bar I could hear the women folk severely reprimanding the uncalled for aggression, and Mike eventually came over and not only apologized but brought me back over to the group and upon his insistence, got me some shots. The kicker, as I was preparing for shots, Andy happened by to say hello, setting Mike off on more apologizing and insistence of shot-taking, so Andy got in on it.

As its getting late and I'm about to head out to catch the midnight showing of Inception starring DiCaprio, I must end my cruise tales. Possibly more to come, stay locked ya'll.

I know kung fu

Fiiinally got my interwebs back. Comcast had sent my modem while I was away (how is 9-5 a good window to sign for a package?? I work too ya kno!) and then failed to resend it so this morning I had to go down and give them a piece of my mind get it.

But now all is well and I'm back to downloading and uploading terabytes of pornography self-educating via unbiased information and news sources made available by the world wide web.

Last night I went and saw the final installment of Pixar's Toy Story franchise. One of my favorite movies as a kid, the original Toy Story boasted an incredible soundtrack, state of the art graphics, and rekindled my personification of pieces of plastic to which I had created entire lives and personalities. The 2nd TS, while not as good to the first in my opinion, was a fun romp too.

The Pixar short before the movie (if you seent a Pixar before, you'd know 's kinda there thing) was phenomenal and it alone was worth the 10.50 I paid (did I mention I went to the 3D showing? 2d is so last year.) so for it alone I recommend TS3.

Opening with the same opening as the first, but this time fully animated and imagined as if the audience were the child playing the game, (I don't consider it a spoiler because even if you remember it line for line from the first movie you really have to see it to get it) it's made clear early on that you're in for a traditional colorful Pixar ride.

With Andy all growed up, and his little sister moved on to ipods and tween mags, the toys haven't had a good "play" in awhile. With the choices for the toys boiling down to attic, daycare or dump, they quickly must decide where to go next. In the confusion of making a decision, they all get put in the car headed for daycare and the adventure begins.

While the story line is kind of "meh" overall, it's Pixar's ability to create moments and tug at the heart strings that makes them such a movie power house. Near the end I will admit I was welling up almost felt one of those "feeling" things. Masters of the art of stirring emotions of nostalgia and iron-made friendships, Pixar really knows how to move audience.

Overall I'd give it a:
"wait for a better review over at GutterTrash's"/10

We Jammin'

While still internet-less I've decided to make it a prerogative to continue the blog in as much normality as possible. Meaning I will continue to miss Music Mondays, regularly fail to update it on my day-to-day adventures, and only make updates of momentous occasion after weeks have passed.

Whats that smell like?

First order of business: Tunes

I just picked up the new Roots album (How I Got Over) and DANG is it good. As I was recently just discussing with my droog GT, ya really gotta be in the right mood for some Blackthought lamentation. Rather aggressive stylistically, and often politically or socially charged, my dude GT likened him to a less-preachy Immortal Technique. The new album (an I gotta take a moment here to say I've only heard it full through once, so as always take with a cup of salt) seems to deal a lot with the growth and change the Roots have undergone on their ascent into "mainstream" more or less. All I can really say at this point is check it out in it's entirety as I don't have much on it yet (soooo helpful, right?)

'member dis guy? ?uestlove drummed for him!

D'Angelo - One Mo Gin

Also did work wit...
Erykah Badu - Didn't Cha Know

The Roots - Now Or Never (Feat. Phonte & Dice Raw)

The Roots - Walk Alone (Feat. uck North P.O.R.N. Dice Raw)

But fuck that shit, fuck that shit...

As the wind is picking up and my allergies worsening, (wassup Knight Library lawn. Free interwebs here but not in *$'s?? smh...) I'm gonna have to wrap this post up and get back inside so I can start breathing normally again.

Stay live crew.
